Committed To Our Communities
Finding ways to give back to our communities is a natural extension of MFA’s consulting work. We focus our giving in three areas that intersect with our work: environmental stewardship, housing and houselessness, and STEM education, with an emphasis on DEI-focused nonprofits and initiatives.

STEM Lessons
We pay our own educations forward by supporting STEM activities in our communities. This takes the form of participating in STEM career days in local schools, organizing a science fair at a local family shelter, and donating to organizations with a STEM focus.

Environmental Stewardship
Working at MFA gives us the opportunity to help clean up some of our communities’ most polluted and distressed properties. But we go beyond our professional work by making environmental stewardship one of the three focus areas of our company’s charitable giving. MFA gives each staff 8 hours of paid volunteer time per year and donates to organizations based on staff nominations.

Housing
Housing and houselessness is one of the three focus areas of our charitable giving program. Along with making one-time donations, MFA also develops relationships with long-term partner organizations. MFA provides employee volunteer time, pro bono work, and other meaningful connections to our partners. MFA’s relationship with Path Home family shelter in Portland, Oregon, is one example of how we seek to use our time and expertise in support of our communities.

Commitment to Community
Ways We Give Back
MFA’s commitment to community takes multiple forms:
- We designate 2 percent of the previous year’s net profits to our charitable giving program.
- MFA staff are paid for 8 hours of volunteer work annually.
- We match employees’ donations for some campaigns.
- We have a company grant program.

Supporting Our Communities

Featured Nonprofit: SMART Reading
Building Bright Futures Through Reading
MFA is proud to support SMART Reading, an Oregon-based nonprofit that fosters a love of books and learning in young students. Through one-on-one reading sessions, SMART Reading pairs volunteers with children in PreK through third grade to build literacy skills, confidence, and lifelong learning habits.
We support this cause in memory of our colleague Kristi Krueger, who introduced us to SMART Reading through their volunteer work. Kristi’s generosity and dedication to community left a lasting impact that continues to inspire us.

MFA Kids
Learn, Create, And Explore With MFA Kids
Here at MFA, we are scientists, planners, communicators, and engineers who caught the learning bug at some point in our childhoods. To pay it forward, we developed a series of STEM lessons for kids based on the real-world activities we do every day. MFA Kids is designed to help the next generation of STEM professionals discover how fun it is to experiment, learn, and create.
