I think the most rewarding part of my work is solving a difficult technical problem or building something that makes somebody’s day a little easier or better. It is also satisfying to know that I am helping the larger community through our efforts to improve GIS use in smaller cities and utilities.

Who is Grant Herbert, GISP?
During his undergraduate studies, Grant became interested in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a way to help understand and evaluate impacts on natural and social environments, sparking a 15-year career in the geospatial field. At the beginning of his career, while in New Zealand and later in the United Kingdom, Grant gained considerable experience in managing databases. Now, at MFA, Grant’s expertise encompasses a myriad of skills including data management, utilizing spatial database and server technologies, creating automated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools, developing Web-based data visualizations, spatial database and geodatabase design and management, and cartography. His passion for the programming and data integration side of GIS has also prompted his interest and experience in developing Web applications and Python scripting, as well as managing ArcGIS Server and SQL Server.
