Enhanced In Situ Bioremediation of DNAPL and Chlorinated Solvents in Groundwater
Client: Confidential / Portland, Oregon

Project Summary
MFA has developed and implemented a cleanup plan at this site that minimizes the client's long-term costs associated with the Portland Harbor Superfund site. The remedial design includes a permeable reactive barrier, which rapidly degrades chlorinated solvents by enhanced in situ bioremediation. MFA completed sophisticated bench- and pilot-scale studies to determine which nutrient and biological inoculants are most effective at eliminating the solvent groundwater plumes. Avoiding excess vibration, controlling injectant dispersal, avoiding extensive underground and overhead utilities, and minimizing adverse impacts to facility operations were all parameters addressed in the remedial design.
