Mount Angel Abbey Hilltop Master Plan and Maintenance Process
Client: Mount Angel Abbey / St. Benedict, Oregon

Project Summary
An award-winning landscape restoration design was completed for the Mount Angel Abbey campus to transition the site into a pedestrian-only central campus. The 800 acres of land owned by the Benedictine monks at Mount Angel Abbey include some of the last remaining original Willamette Valley scattered oak grasslands in Oregon. A ten-year landscape design plan was developed with recommendations for forest thinning, invasive species removal, pathway development, and future planting. The emphasis of the plan was to develop a sustainable landscape. A new site plan for the Hilltop was developed to create a pedestrian-only campus with only emergency vehicle access. The new plan connected the church plaza with its new bell tower with other surrounding buildings, while creating a contemplative green space in the middle. Pedestrian circulation, with detailed paving patterns and planting, integrated the space with the surrounding architecture and valley landscape beyond.
