EPA Profiles Successful Maul Foster & Alongi Remediation Project

The current issue of EPA’s Technology News and Trends provides a summary of the innovative enhanced bioremediation implemented by MFA at the Siltronic site in Portland, Oregon. The site was impacted by a release of trichloroethene (TCE), likely as a dense, non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). TCE DNAPLs are considered highly recalcitrant and are typically difficult to remediate. As described in the article, MFA identified in situ chemical reduction (ISCR) combined with bioremediation as the best technology for remediating a TCE DNAPL source. The remedial action objective was achieved within six months following implementation, with TCE concentrations recently approaching the EPA MCL.
